Beliefs
We confess Jesus Christ as the Son of the living God, our Savior and Lord.
We believe the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God.
We believe that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
We observe two ordinances: Believer's Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
Finally, we believe that all Christians are called to witness, to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God.
Children
Children are important to us here at First Baptist Church. We take seriously Jesus' command "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them for the kingdom of God belongs to them." We want to make sure children have the opportunity to hear and learn about Jesus.
We offer Sunday school classes, Vacation Bible School, AWANA, a weekly children's message in our worship service. All of this is done to assist parents in raising their children with the knowledge that Jesus loves them and so do we!
Families
Families come in all shapes and sizes. Here at First Baptist we hope to share Jesus with our families in ways that will be relevant to our daily lives.
We are part of a larger family, the family of God. There are Christian people all around the world and we understand as God's family we have a responsibility to serve one another.
Our ministry together includes Bible studies, men's and women's fellowship groups and family worship.
History
First Baptist Church in Norfolk was founded December 29, 1889 with 11 charter members and Rev. Joseph Cossairt as Pastor. First Baptist has seen many changes in buildings, programs and pastors through the years but the task has remained the same. We seek to faithfully express God's redeeming and reconciling love to our community and the world, bringing the message of Jesus Christ.
